How to Start Being More Eco Friendly
At some point, hopefully everyone will become more eco conscious, eco aware and eco friendly. This earth is our home and it's health is directly related to our own. The relationship between mankind and the earth needs to be symbiotic if we are all to thrive.
Ideally, everyone gives a darn, but in all honesty, it is unlikely. As much as I'd like to be able to say otherwise, it is sadly not the case.
I witnessed someone throwing trash out their car window just days ago. It was so frustrating. That person is nowhere close to using less plastic, bio degradable soaps, or less water. But the person reading this is. And we can only do what we can do.
There are those who use zero plastic, all bio-degradable soaps, compost, garden, run their car on vegetable oil from their local restaurant, etc. And that is great. But some of that might sound overwhelming for the beginner. Don't feel bad.
Every bit matters. So if you are just getting started, the first thing you should do is try to become more mindful of the choices you are making. Here are a few of the easier things to do. Pick something that seems doable and easy enough to fit into your lifestyle.
Some easier things: 1.) Take your own bags into the stores, 2.) Use bio degradable cleaning products, 3.) Start a compost if you live somewhere conducive to that, 4.) Start a small herb garden on your windowsill or deck.
If you are already doing these things, AWESOME! You are not a beginner.
Now you can move onto: 1.) Use reef safe sunscreen, 2.) Increase the size of your garden, 3.) Utilize local farmer's markets 3.) Make your own cleaning products (super easy), 4.) Take your carryout containers with you to restaurants if you think you'll have leftovers. 5.) Take shorter showers, 6.) Collect rain water for your garden, 7.) Stop fertilizing your lawn
These lists can go on and on. Just remember this: A LITTLE BIT DOES MATTER.
No guilting or shaming here. I am certainly no eco-guru. Some days I am lazy or forgetful and others I do very well. Overall, just trying to do my part and then some and hoping to spread a little motivation. :)
Please feel free to share some of your easiest changes.
